Caption: At the Learning Center during an April 10th, 2020 snow flurry: “Dusty” served with the Army Nurse Corps in the Iron Triangle of Vietnam in 1968. She worked in critical care units. Of the 7,484 women who served in Vietnam, 6,250 or 83.5% were nurses. Eight nurses died in Vietnam; one was killed in action. We dedicate this poem to our sisters who served in Vietnam. They served their country, saving many lives and giving great comfort. Unfortunately, in 2006, it was revealed that author Dana Shuster (“Dusty”) was never a nurse, never in the military and never in Vietnam. Shuster’s misrepresentation aside, the poem is a poignant expression of human connection at the end of life.
